남반구에서 최초의 소녀상, 미국(2곳)과 캐나다(1곳)에 이어 외국에 세워진 네번째 소녀상으로 8월 6일 시드니에 세워졌습니다.
이날 행사에는 일본군 위안부 피해자인 길원옥(89) 할머니를 비롯해 윤미향 한국정신대문제대책협의회 대표, 김서경 작가, 이재명 성남시장 등을 비롯해 현지 교민들과 시민 등 400여명이 참석했다. 호주 쪽에선 원주민 여성으로는 처음 연방 하원의원에 당선된 린다 버니와 인권운동가 빌 크루스 목사, 일본군 '위안부' 피해자(네덜란드계 호주인) 얀 루프 오헤른 할머니의 딸 캐롤, 중국계인 어니스트 웡 뉴사우스웨일스주 상원의원 등이 참석했다.
몸이 불편한 가운데에도 소녀상 제막식에 참석한 길원옥 할머니는 “소녀상을 통해서 호주에 사는 사람들도 우리 역사의 진실을 배울 수 있을 것”이라며 “일본 정부가 진실을 감춘 채 범죄를 부정하고 책임을 회피하지 않도록 여러분들이 힘써 달라”고 당부했다.
Comfort women statue unveiled in Sydney
Comfort women statue has been unveiled in Sydney today. Statue Establishing Committee has unveiled the statue today at a traditional welcoming ceremony at the Korean Community Hall in Croydon Park. Guests including Linda Burney MP, Won-Ok Gil, a former comfort woman from South Korea, and Reverend Bill Crews, who has nominated the church grounds of his Uniting Church Parish in Ashfield came to this ceremony today.
It's designed to be a symbol of peace, but instead a statue representing the so-called "comfort women" of World War II is dividing communities in Australia. The spokesman for the Peace Statue Establishing Committee, Si Hyun Paik said the statue is intended to remember the ordeal of the comfort women.
Not everyone sees it that way, with the Australia-Japan Community Network threatening legal action.
Just a year ago, plans for a similar statue in a nearby suburb were scrapped following community outrage.
